Summers in Northern Michigan are nothing short of magical. In this article, we will share some local traditions and provide valuable tips to help you recreate this unforgettable experience with your loved ones when boating on Lake Leelanau.

Planning Your Boating Adventure:

Consider renting a boat from Leelanau Water Sports and scheduling your excursion on July 3rd or 5th for optimal weather conditions and a chance to witness something truly special (more on that later). Head to the Bingham boat launch where you’ll meet your rental pontoon boat, complete with life jackets and tubes. Don’t forget to pack essentials such as sunscreen, hats, drinks, snacks, and beach towels to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable day on the water. In addition, this trip requires warm clothes, shoes, blankets, and some glow sticks!

Exploring South Lake Leelanau:

Once on board, kickstart your adventure by hooking up tubes and cruising around South Lake Leelanau. After some exhilarating water activities, make your way to the tranquil shallows on the East side of the lake. Drop anchor and indulge in a leisurely float, basking in the warm sun and calling ahead to order lunch from one of the charming eateries in the Narrows Village. Nittolo’s serves Artisan Flatbread Pizza and Dick’s Pour House serves the Thick-Crust-Heavy-Toppings Pizzas.

The Narrows:

Continue your journey by cruising up the lake towards the Narrows (Village of Lake Leelanau), following the buoys to stay centered in the shallow waters. You may need to drop the boat shade to fit under the bridge. Retrieve your lunch from your preferred vendor and enjoy your meal tied up to the dock or take it with you as you venture on to North Lake Leelanau.

Venturing to North Lake Leelanau and Beyond:

Explore North Lake Leelanau, taking a refreshing dip in its sandy-bottomed spots. Then, navigate towards Leland (Fish Town), where you can tie up at the public dock and embark on a delightful stroll through the historic Fishtown district. Treat yourself to some locally made ice cream and witness the breathtaking sunset over Lake Michigan from the nearby beach.

Embracing the Evening Magic:

As the temperature cools, wrap up in blankets and distribute glowsticks for a magical evening cruise back down both lakes. During this hour-long cruise, marvel at the starry sky, undisturbed by the city lights, as you make your way back to the boat launch. If you’re lucky enough to visit on July 3rd, 4th, or 5th, be treated to a dazzling display of fireworks launched by locals along the shoreline, adding an extra touch of magic to your experience. As you arrive back at the boat launch under the cover of night, with sun-kissed cheeks and happy hearts, reflect on the memories created during this unforgettable day.
